The Piper Key Club in Kansas City, Kansas, served Harvesters in Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday, February 12th. Twenty four students and advisor, Carolyn Elvers, worked on putting together 1200 "BackSnack" packs and boxing them. These packs are given to children in the Metro area.
"More than 86,000 children in Harvesters’ service area receive free and reduced-price school meals during the week, but are at risk of hunger on weekends. Harvesters offers the BackSnack program, which provides backpacks of food to low-income children for the weekend, to combat weekend hunger. The program creates a partnership between Harvesters, a participating school and a local corporate, civic or religious organization. Harvesters provides the food, and the partnering organization provides the backpacks and the volunteers to pick them up, clean them out and pack them with food. Schools distribute the backpacks on Friday to students who bring them back on Monday to start the process again." – from the Harvester’s website, www.harvesters.org. The Piper Key Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of KCK West

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Kansas City, Kansas West adopted 21 youth at KVC for Christmas. Gifts for the youth in the residential care of KVC were distributed so that the young people there might enjoy a holiday gift. Also during this holiday, Kiwanis has been able to provide food baskets to more than 12 families, whose needs were identified by Kiwanis members. Money raised throughout the year by club members was used to purchase the food baskets. Club members shopped grocery sales, which left enough funds in the coffers to also purchase gift cards to shoe stores. These gift cards will be given to the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Homeless Student Services division.
“It has been very fulfilling for us to be able to help others during this season of giving,” said Service Committee co-chair Pat Hurrelbrink. “We invite anyone interested in serving our community and our area youth to join us,” she added. The KCK West Kiwanis club meets every Thursday morning at 7:30a.m. at the Country Club Bank, 110th and Parallel. For more information, visit www.kckwestkiwanis.org
